Chapter 29

Lance was glad to see his wife finally getting some sleep. She’d come home from work looking sad and dejected, and he’d readied himself for her mood swings. But she’d gone to bed, claiming exhaustion, and had slept all evening and through the night. Since that had been a rarity lately, he relished the sight of her knocked out. Lance walked over to the sofa, where Tia was sleeping soundly, pulled the afghan up on her, and gently kissed her forehead. Lance headed back to his bedroom, where he changed into workout clothes. Before he left, he scribbled a note to let Tia know he was going to the gym. Part of him was leery about leaving her at home, but he’d been so stressed lately that he’d been skipping his workouts and he needed to burn off some steam.

Thirty minutes later, Lance stood over his friend Brian, spotting him as he lifted weights.

“So, explain this to me again.” Brian placed the barbell back on the stand. “Why has all of this been going on and you haven’t told me?”

Lance shrugged. “Man, it’s just wild. Everything caught me off guard and I’m trying to figure out how to deal with it. I’m trying to be understanding, but this erratic behavior is going to make me lose my mind.” He switched places on the bench and began hoisting the barbell straight upward.

After several repetitions, Brian spoke up. “I know you guys think it’s the migraines, but that wouldn’t cause her to act all crazy, would it?”

Lance shrugged. He really had no idea.

“Maybe she has some kind of hormonal imbalance,” Brian said, then snapped his fingers as if an idea had just hit him. “Or better yet, maybe she’s pregnant.”

Lance stopped just as he was about to start another set. They’d talked about trying to start a family, but they hadn’t been trying for a pregnancy. Then again, they hadn’t been not trying for a pregnancy, either. Lance sat up with this startling realization.

Brian nodded as if he’d figured it all out. “I’m telling you, dude, women flip out when they get pregnant. It’s like their hormones go into overdrive.”

Lance slowly nodded. That had to be it. That had to be the explanation for these wild mood swings and nutty behavior.

“So is this how Keri acted?” Lance asked, referring to Brian’s first wife.

“Keri and Chandra,” Brian replied, referring to his second wife. “They both lost their ever-loving minds when they were pregnant.”

“Now that I think about it, Tia did throw up the other day,” Lance said.

Brian slapped his knee. “See, I’m a freaking genius. Your wife is pregnant, dude. That’s why she’s acting all crazy.”

A small smile crept up on Lance’s face. Could he soon be a father? Could that really be what was wrong with Tia?

Lance couldn’t wait to get home. But first, he had to stop by a CVS pharmacy and pick up a pregnancy test. Hopefully, he’d soon have the answer as to exactly what was wrong with his wife.
